WHO IS AFRIKANA?

Afrikana is Richmond’s first Black film festival, a people-powered and Black woman-founded platform dedicated to celebrating global Black storytelling.

Founded in 2014 by Enjoli Moon, Afrikana Independent Film Festival is now celebrating 10 years of elevating high-quality, intentional films created by and about people of the African diaspora. Based in Richmond, Virginia, the birthplace of the Black American story, Afrikana uses cinema as a catalyst for connection, education, and cultural celebration.

With film as the foundation, we blend together live performance, thoughtful conversation, interactive workshops, and immersive culinary events for an experience infused with diasporic pride and southern hospitality. This multi-sensory approach creates a unique cultural texture that makes Afrikana unlike any other film festival.

As a people-powered organization, the work of our dedicated team, growing network of creatives, and supportive community that believes in the power of Black stories is at the heart of what we do and how we do it. It is this collective energy that drives Afrikana forward and shapes who we are becoming.

As we mark a decade of impact, Afrikana is expanding its international footprint while remaining deeply rooted in Richmond’s creative culture. In addition to our annual film festival, our work includes year-round programming in youth education, filmmaker residencies, global screening events, and cultural initiatives that build bridges across the diaspora.

Afrikana is not just where Black stories are told, it’s where they are celebrated and elevated, and where a decade of storytelling is just the beginning.
